¿Qué Pasa, U.S.A.?

¿Qué Pasa, U.S.A.? was America's first bilingual situation comedy. and the first sitcom to be produced for PBS.   It was produced and taped in front of a live studio audience at PBS member station  The program explored the trials and tribulations faced by the Peñas, a Cuban-American family living in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood, as they struggled to cope with a new country and a new language.   Although I only watched a few episodes of the comedy, the series title became a well know phrase among viewers and non viewers alike.  "¿Qué Pasa, U.S.A.? " translates to "What is Happening, U.S.A.?"   With all the news coverage focusing largely on the GOP presidential candidates, and Obama's bid for reelection, we tend to forget that there are other very important events taking place daily.  Many of them can and will affect our future lives.

Tonight, Two Sisters From The Right, bring you three articles which deal with what is happening in the U.S.A.

Colonel Allen  West - U.S. House of Represntatives (R) FL
Today’s paradigm of battle and combat operations is completely different from what I experienced in 1982 when I was commissioned as a young lieutenant in the U.S. Army. At that time, the battlefield was much simpler.
In broad strokes, there was the Soviet Union on one side and the United States on the other. We were familiar with their tactics and equipment, and they with ours. Both sides wore uniforms, and every now and then we would stage war games on border control missions. Read More

Congressman Paul Ryan (D) WI

Saving the American Idea, alas, is the last thing on our president's closed mind.
At the Heritage Foundation last week, House Budget CommitteeChairman Paul Ryan demonstrated why he doesn't need to be running for President to be framing the debate for 2012. He delivered there on October 26 a breathtakingly beautiful speech on Saving the American Idea, which defines the Spirit of 2012.
He began, "The mission of the Heritage Foundation is to promote the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense. These are the principles that define the American idea. And this mission has never been timelier, because these principles are very much under threat from policies here in Washington."
Ryan, a disciple of and former staffer for the late Jack Kemp, then explained, "What makes America exceptional -- what gives life to the American Idea -- is our dedication to the self-evident truth that we are all created equal, giving us equal rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And that means opportunity."  Read More

As revolutions go, the Republic seems fairly safe
OWS at Zucotti Park

Last week I found myself in lower Manhattan. With a bit of time to kill, I decided to satisfy my curiosity about the Occupy Wall Street protests (I hesitate to describe what I saw as a movement). So, I wandered over to Zuccotti Park and waded in. First, as an historian with a passion for medieval history, I have often wondered what odors would assail the senses if one was among a large group of individuals who had only a passing acquaintance with concepts of hygiene. I no longer have to wonder. If any of you are planning to send CARE packages to the OWS folks, please, for the love of God, include soap, along with instructions for its use.

I also noted that the average OWS revolutionary is rather lazy. I began my wanderings at about 10:00 a.m., and at least half of the OWS occupiers were still wrapped up in their sleeping bags and tarps. If the day ever arrives when I feel compelled to lead a revolution, job number one will be recruiting folks ready to roll out the banners and start chanting slogans at the crack of dawn. I may make some exceptions for those leading midnight marches the night before, but that’s it. Everyone else will be manning the barricades by first light.  Read More

What is news? It's hard to quantify. Certainly news has changed completely, and the morning shows are not really designed to bring you the news, except to tell you what happened overnight, and the rest of it is a kind of magazine mentality - a little bit of this, a little bit of that.  It's harder to be an educated and informed citizen.
